When patients decide they are finally ready for a smile makeover, they want results instantly. However, if you are experiencing bleeding, swollen, or receding gums, your cosmetic timeline might need a slight adjustment. The health of your gums is the absolute foundation of your smile. This guide explains why placing cosmetic restorations over unhealthy gums is a major medical risk, and exactly how we solve it.
A responsible, premium cosmetic dentist will never place permanent porcelain or composite veneers over active gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis).
Think of your gums and jawbone as the foundation of a house, and your veneers as a beautiful new roof. If the foundation is crumbling, building a new roof will eventually lead to collapse.
Placing cosmetic shells over infected tissue leads to three severe complications:
1. Bonding Failure: Dental adhesives require a completely dry, clean environment to bond the porcelain to your enamel. Bleeding and inflamed gums introduce moisture and bacteria, severely compromising the bond and causing veneers to pop off.
2. Aesthetic Ruin: Gum disease causes your gum tissue to slowly pull away from the teeth (recession). If you place veneers today, and your gums recede tomorrow, a harsh, dark line will become visible at the top of your teeth where the veneer ends and the tooth root begins.
3. Trapped Infection: Covering an infected tooth margin with a veneer can trap bacteria underneath the ceramic, accelerating bone loss and potentially leading to the complete loss of the natural tooth.
Having gum disease does not mean you can never get a Hollywood Smile—it just means we need to cure the infection first!
At Manchester Medical Center, we implement a “Health-First” protocol. If you have gingivitis, we begin with a deep professional scaling and root planing treatment to clear out the bacteria. With proper home care, healthy pink gums usually return within 2 to 4 weeks. Once the tissue is firm, pink, and healthy, we immediately begin the 3D digital design of your new veneers.
Do not let bleeding gums discourage you from booking a cosmetic consultation. Through Digital Smile Design (DSD), we can digitally plan your new smile and show you the mockup while your gums are healing, meaning your cosmetic journey begins on day one!
The earliest signs of gingivitis include gums that are red, swollen, or bleed easily when you brush or floss. Healthy gums should be firm, pale pink, and painless.
High-quality, perfectly fitted porcelain veneers do not cause gum disease. However, cheap, bulky veneers with “overhangs” at the gumline can trap food and plaque, making it impossible to floss properly, which quickly leads to severe gingivitis.
Yes, provided the active infection is completely cured and your bone levels are stable. In fact, custom veneers can be specifically designed to cover the exposed, sensitive root areas left behind by past gum recession.
